When a pair of horse thieves tried slipping past the lower timberline, he dropped his reins and drove his horse down a shale slope, cutting them off at the gorge a mile ahead.
Before they could draw iron, he was leaning against a boulder, revolver already leveled across the gorge, flipping a silver coin with his free hand.
“Boys, you missed the toll booth back at the creek.”
The two men looked at him, then at the long way around.
He grinned.
They turned their horses.
